However, primary stability is difficult to quantify\u00a0<i>in vivo<\/i>\u00a0and the biomechanical phenomena occurring during the press\u2013fit insertion of an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/acetabular-cup\">acetabular cup<\/a>\u00a0(AC) implant are still poorly understood. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of the cortical and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/cancellous-bone\">trabecular bone<\/a>\u00a0Young&#8217;s moduli\u00a0<i>E<\/i>c\u00a0and\u00a0<i>E<\/i>t, the interference fit\u00a0<i>IF<\/i>\u00a0and the sliding\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/computer-science\/friction-coefficient\">friction coefficient<\/a>\u00a0of the bone\u2013implant interface\u00a0<i>\u03bc<\/i>\u00a0on the primary stability of an AC implant. For each parameter combination, the insertion of the AC implant into the hip cavity and consequent pull\u2013out are simulated with a 3D\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/computer-science\/finite-element-method\">finite element<\/a>\u00a0model of a human hemi\u2013pelvis. The primary stability is assessed by determining the polar gap and the maximum pull\u2013out force. The polar gap increases along with all considered parameters. The pull\u2013out force shows a continuous increase with\u00a0<i>E<\/i>c\u00a0and\u00a0<i>E<\/i>t\u00a0and a non-linear variation as a function of\u00a0<i>\u03bc<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>IF<\/i>\u00a0is obtained. For\u00a0<i>\u03bc<\/i>\u00a0&gt;\u00a00.6 and\u00a0<i>IF<\/i>\u00a0&gt;\u00a01.4 mm the primary stability decreases, and a combination of smaller\u00a0<i>\u03bc<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>IF<\/i>\u00a0lead to a better fixation. Based on the patient&#8217;s bone stiffness, optimal combinations of\u00a0<i>\u03bc<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>IF<\/i>\u00a0can be identified. The results are in good qualitative agreement with previous studies and provide a better understanding of the determinants of the AC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/primary-implant-stability\">implant primary stability<\/a>.
